Example Simulation: Clinical Wound Care Pathways

Learn how discrete event simulation can be used to determine the expected value of new, innovative wound care technology and support medical decision making.

Why use simulation?

Simulation is gaining popularity over the use of Markov models in the health economics community and policymakers for its ability to accurately model the course of a disease and any impact on constrained resources.

With SIMUL8 Studio, simulations can be accessed online. This allows decision-makers to easily interact with the simulation, run their own experiments, and better understand both the disease progression as well as the impact of an intervention on cost, waiting times, resource utilization and patient outcomes.

How to use the simulation

This simulation shows what impact introducing a new intervention has on patients who require treatment for venous leg ulcers. This intervention will reduce the healing time for patients but at an additional cost to current treatment methods. Currently patients can be treated within the community or at a leg ulcer clinic.

Click the ‘Run as real world’ button to change the number of patients and adjust the percentage of patients receiving treatment in the community or at an ulcer clinic. This should be run first, as your baseline run, and be used for comparison.

Clicking on ‘Run to test new intervention’ will allow you to adjust the percentage of patients who will now receive the new intervention.

Quick comparative results can be found on the home screen with more detailed results available under the ‘Detailed results’ button. Additional results can be found under the ‘What-if results’ button.

Run the simulation several times to see what impact reducing the healing time for patients has on costs and bed days.

Learn more about the benefits of using simulation

Simulation for healthcare providers

Simulation enables healthcare systems and processes to be tested in a safe, virtual environment without risk to patients and staff – supporting organizations to make better decisions, improve systems of care and maximize resources.

Simulation for pharmaceutical and medical device companies

Across manufacturing, supply chain, health economics and market access, simulation enables organizations to overcome challenges, improve efficiency, increase revenue and support healthcare payer buy-in.
