Take Process Mining Beyond ‘As Is’ | SIMUL8 Simulation Software

SIMUL8 use cases

Take process mining beyond just ‘as is’ with simulation

Don’t just uncover processes, experiment with and improve them with simulation

Process mining aims to help map, understand and improve your business processes by extracting data from event logs generated by ERP, Workflow Management and other information systems. It allows you to visualize current (or ‘as is’ processes), verify process conformance and test simple process changes to make improvements.

But did you know that simulation could help you achieve all these goals and so much more, all in less time and at a fraction of the cost?

Go beyond ‘as is’ process discovery with simulation

Visualize processes and quickly test any number of changes with SIMUL8

Delivers more bang for your buck with faster time to value

Process mining tools are usually enterprise-level solutions. Setup costs run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars with lengthy setup times to access the required data and format it correctly. The low cost of simulation software makes it accessible with many businesses seeing return of investment in millions of dollars!

Thanks to an intuitive drag and drop interface, creating your process flow with SIMUL8 is just like drawing a flowchart. Add timing information, when work arrives (products, patients, paperwork, etc), the time tasks take to complete and rules about where work goes and you’ve created the simulation to start experimenting!

"SIMUL8 allows us to run experiments on our business processes before we implement them, saving time, investment and effort in change management. The bang for the buck is astounding."

Don’t let the availability of data hold you back on process improvement

Data is an important aspect of building accurate simulations of your process, but unlike process mining you don’t have to have precisely formatted event log data, or even complete data to start generating game-changing insights. As creating a simulation helps everyone to think about every aspect of a process, it quickly brings inconsistencies and inefficiencies to the surface, as well as ideas to make improvements.

When you’re ready to utilize data in your simulation, it’s easy to import with SIMUL8 from Excel, Google Sheets, text and CSV files, or dynamic database connections via SQL and ODBC. You can even take things a step further to pull in live data and create real-time digital twins of your process or organization.

Understand the impact of process changes in seconds, not months

Process mining tools allow you to make basic configuration changes to the ‘as-is’ process to see the impact. Examples include changing the number of staff, task duration and working hours. This might be enough to start making small improvements, but it’s not possible to test major changes, run and compare different improvement scenarios. Once you have decided to make a change in real-life, you’ll then need to wait weeks or months to see the actual impact by generating another process mining map.

Simulation doesn’t have these limitations. You can model the current ‘as is’ process to identify issues, but then go a step beyond this to rapidly change any aspect to make improvements. From day-to-day operations to big strategic changes, there’s no limit to what you can experiment with.

SIMUL8’s optimization, scenario management and sensitivity analysis features also makes it easy to analyze the results of your simulations. From days, to months, to the next 100 years or beyond, you can see how the system would perform at any point in the future. By thoroughly testing these changes and external influences with simulation ahead of implementation, you make better, confident decisions.

Plan processes that don’t exist yet

Process mining only allow you to understand and make changes to processes that already exist. But what happens when you need to plan a new business process? How can you be confident that it’ll be fit for purpose or what the most effective implementation should be?

With simulation you can design the flow of your process, identify constraints and compare different configurations to answer implementation questions like:

  • What will the return on our investment be?
  • Can the process cope with current and future demand?
  • What staffing do we need to effectively run the process?
  • What schedule should staff work to?
  • What equipment will we need and where should we place it to maximize efficiency?
  • And much more!

Drive day-to-day decisions and operational excellence

Simulation isn’t just used for large scale, one-off process improvement projects. The key to a successful, competitive organization is continually refining every element of your process.

Using operational simulation models – also known as digital twins of your organization - you can monitor metrics on a regular basis, highlight performance issues and adjust processes straight away. For example, the day-to-day operation of a bank, the running of orders on an assembly line, or the staff assignment of a hospital or call center.
