SIMUL8 Simulation Software Feature Tour - simulation objects

SIMUL8 Tour - Simulate Any Process

Every simulation is created by dragging and dropping objects on screen. Adding detail to them creates a simulation that represents your process.

SIMUL8 is unique, we have a very limited number of objects to make as easy as possible for you to learn and use SIMUL8. But these objects are incredibly powerful and can do anything you need to. We've yet to find any process we can't simulate. The flexibility of our objects make SIMUL8 ideal for operational or strategic modeling.

Simulation Objects

Start Point
This is where work first appears in your simulation. You can have as many Start Points as you like.
More on Start Points

End
An End is a place where work that is complete leaves your simulation.
More on Ends

Activities
An Activity is a place where work takes place on Work Items, and can be anything from a machine to a reception desk.
More on Activities

Queue
A Queue is a place where work to be done can wait until appropriate resources or Activities are available.
More on Queues

Resources
Resources could be a member of staff, or a piece of equipment that an Activity needs before it can start work.
More on Resources

Work Items
Individual work items flow through the objects in the simulation. A Work Item can be: products in a factory, patients in a hospital, invoices in an Accounts department.
More on Work Items

Agent Based Simulation
Work Items are intelligent entities so it's possible to use SIMUL8 to conduct agent based simulation.
More on ABS

Groups
A group is a collection of simulation objects to quickly and easily control and duplicate areas of your simulation

Advanced Objects

The advanced simulation objects are only available with SIMUL8 Professional

Conveyors
Conveyors are objects which simulate real life conveyors, making it easy to simulate your factory in just a few clicks.
More on Conveyors

Transport Objects
These include Paths, Path Networks, Loaders, Vehicles Classes and Vehicles and are designed to allow users to simulate material handling scenarios.
More on Transport Objects

Components
Components let you create your own simulation objects and add them to SIMUL8's standard objects.
More on Components

Tanks, Pipes and Process are all ideal for Continuous (System Dynamics) simulation.

Tanks
Tanks handle liquids or other materials that are best measured in volume rather than discrete units.
More on Tanks

Pipes
Pipes handle the flow between Tanks.
More on Pipes

Process
Process is a special Activity combined with a conveyor to simulate long ovens (or similar equipment) that continuously batch or process large volumes of material. For example: in the food industry one batch of ingredients can be converted into millions of cookies.

Routing

Routing Arrows
Objects are connected by drawing routing arrows between them. Routing arrows show all the possible routes a work item could take. Rules can be attached to these arrows to control the way work flows.

Travel Time
For each routing link that work items travel, a travel time can be specified.
More on Routing

Routing In
This is a way of controlling how a Work Items are selected by an Activity, and how it accepts this work (e.g. in batches, when other work complete etc.)
More on Routing In

Routing Out
This is how to control where Work Items are sent to from an Activity, Start Point or Conveyor.
More on Routing Out

Jobs Matrix
The jobs matrix controls complex routings and timings, for instance if an Activity will feed Work Items out to different destinations depending of the type of work.
More on Jobs Matrix

Cycle Matrix
This feature makes it very easy to simulate situations where work is described as a series of operations on one or more machines .
More on Cycle Matrix

Jobs Matrix and Cycle Matrix are only available with SIMUL8 Professional

Common Windows Functions

SIMUL8 contains all of the standard functions you'd expect from a quality software package (we only mention them because some simulation packages don't bother with them - but we think they're important).

Undo/Redo
SIMUL8 includes an undo /redo facility.

Find
Find allows you to search for any simulation object by name.

Copy&Paste
Any simulation object or group of simulation objects, including their routing information can be copied using the standard copy and paste functions

Print
Standard printing facilities are available including print preview. It is possible to print all simulation windows including results and internal spreadsheets.

Zoom
Zoom to any degree of accuracy and quickly zoom using the mouse wheel.

Macro Recorder
Record and play back macros. Just like in Excel all key and mouse moves are recorded. This is great for presentations and for routine tasks, for example automating runs.
