How simulation can be used healthcare

SIMUL8 has been used for so many purposes across the globe, here are some at a glance examples of how simulation can be used.

SIMUL8 used for "Computer Simulation Modeling for the Prevention of Diabetes Mellitus (Prameha)"
Posted in the Journal of Applied Sciences. Simulating the care of people with Type 2 Diabetes through the Indian System of Medicine called Ayurveda. The model incorporates Prameha risk groupings and follows individual patients through the system.

SIMUL8 used to simulate the Cardiac Health Care System across Wales
- Work Completed by Dr. John Watkins, School of Medicine, Cardiff University.
- Simulation used to estimate the effects of interventions, such as extra facilities.
- Extensive data relating to all aspects of cardiac care throughout Wales were analyzed.
- Through perturbations of this simulation an investigation was conducted to assess the effects on inequities of changes to the current system conducted.

SIMUL8 used to model System Resilience
- Simulation used to demonstrate organizational resilience across Oxfordshire against the ten compliance priorities identified by NHS South Central.
- It focuses on the management structures within and between organizations and evidence of the rigorous processes in place to manage increased demand and ensure maintenance of high quality care in times of system challenge.

Emergency Department Redesign
A major London hospital planned to build a new emergency department to cope with growth in demand. SIMUL8 was asked to build a simulation to model the flow of patients through the new department to test whether it could cope with additional demand and to determine the staffing required for the new department.

The simulation demonstrated that the department was fit for purpose, but showed a need for additional staffing in key areas. "The simulation has really helped us to understand how the new department will work and the investment in this work has really helped to give us confidence in our decision to build".

Day of Surgery Waiting Time Improvements
Patients in an Australian hospital were experiencing long delays in waiting for their day surgery. Simulation was used to test the solutions to this problem. The intention had been to expand the waiting area, but in fact, increased use of trolleys provided the solution.

Hospital IT Department
A hospital IT department was concerned that problems were not being addressed in a quickly enough by their call center and worked with the staff to understand how to ensure that the center worked more efficiently before adopting a new data system. The team were able to use the simulation to improve their response times.

Winter Pressures
A health system wanted to test resilience plans to ensure that patients would be cared for in the case of additional demand such as occurs during the winter time. They built a simulation to model emergency care from ambulance calls through the emergency department to the management of beds and used the model to test their emergency plans.

Bed Turnover
A major US hospital experienced waiting time problems in the ER as beds were unavailable to patients. Simulation allowed them to test conflicting solutions from different stakeholders, with the result that they found they only needed one additional staff member to solve the problem, rather than more beds.

Simulating Blood Service Supply Chain
Blood donors are in short supply, the shelf-life of blood products is relatively short and blood product ordering policies are potentially complex - making the National Blood Service's supply chain an ideal problem to be solved by simulation. A team used extensive real life data to create a simulation with SIMUL8

Simulation of a radiotherapy treatment system
This study describes a study of a complex radiotherapy treatment system observed at a local cancer centre, and aims at understanding the treatment process, and identifying complexities and bottlenecks from the interactions between patients and human or machine resources using discrete-event simulation.
