Routing Arrows

Routing arrows are used to connect simulation objects.

[Simul8]

Routing arrows show the route that Work Items take through the simulation. (Unless you select to use one of the Alternative Routing Methodologies). You have an opportunity to control routing as Work Items enter and leave objects on the screen. Click the Routing In or Routing Out buttons in the Activity dialog box. Routing can be controlled at Activities and Conveyors but can also be controlled at other objects by…

Model building basics - Results

The results facilities in Simul8 let you to collect and review measures of performance. This is the goal in the case of most simulation studies. The performance measures predict how the real system will behave.

Most results information about a simulation run is accessed via the ribbon tabs for individual simulation objects. For example: click on the RESULTS button in the ribbon tab for a Queue to view the average waiting time of items that have been through th…

Results Collection Period

The results collection period is how long the simulation should be run to collect results. The simulation will not start to collect results until the warm-up-period is finished. As default, Simul8 will run your simulation for one week, but you can change it to run for days, weeks, months, years, or your specified simulation time unit.

Run

When you press the Run button your simulation executes. You see the Work Items (products, patients, paper work etc.) move around your organization. The clock in the corner of the screen tells you what the equivalent time would be in the real system.

Simulation Objects

Typically the work done in your system will be simulated by it going through a number of objects that are on the screen, but they can be invisible, and some types of object (e.g. Resources) are “used” at other objects (e.g. at Activities).

Trials

A Trial is a series of runs, performed with the same settings for all parameters. The only thing changing are the “random numbers” that Simul8 uses for sampling values from distributions. As the simulation is intended to resemble real life scenarios (i.e. with variability), it is important to run a simulation more than once. A Trial gives you more rounded results and improves accuracy in terms of proposed performance measures (results).

A Work Item is the work that is done in the organization being simulated.

Examples are:

	* Patients in a hospital
	* Invoices in an Accounts department
	* Products in a factory

Individual Work Items flow through the Activities in a simulation.
