Attaching a Label

Labels can be used to route Work Items, to collect data and for a number of other purposes.

To enable a Work Item to be controlled by a Label's value or to be able to collect data in a Label, the Label must be added to the Work Item. Simul8 automatically adds a Label to the main Work Item type but if you have more that one Work Item type then you must add the Label to them.

Here's how you can delete Labels you don't need in your simulation:

1. Remove the Label from the Main Work Item Type

Once running your simulation, each Label gets attached to the Main Work Item Type. If you want to delete the Label after the end of the Run, go to

Labels Control Work Item Images

To use Labels to change the image for a Work Item as it completes work at an Activity, ensure one of the Work Items Label is set in one of the ways described below.

The value of the Label DOES NOT have to be changed by the Activity's Actions but the Label does need to be listed in the Actions dialog (the particular Label can be set to NO CHANGE if desired).

Labels can be attached to any Work Item going through the simulation. For example you might attach a Label “Illness” to Work Item type “Patients” and set this Label to a code number as they enter your simulation of a hospital. Each code number would represent a type of illness and could be used to route the patients though the different

Using Labels to determine the number of times a Work Item visits an Activity

If a Work Item needs to go through the same Activity more than once, we could model this by adding each individual Activity in a linear process. For example if a patient needs 12 treatments (one per month for a year) before moving on we could add each individual treatment as an Activity.

Some Label names have a special meaning to Simul8. You should not use these names other than in the context for what they were intended. You can add any of these special Label to your simulation in the same way as a creating any other Label. You will be asked to confirm that you want to use them for this special purpose should you create a new Label with any of these names.

Labels Tutorial

We use Labels to attach a value or attribute to a Work Item.

At the moment, all the Work Items traveling through our simulation are the same, i.e. they have no distinguishing attributes.

[Simul8 Labels Tutorial]

We want to distinguish between different types of Work Item, for example by marking each one as either Green or a Blue Car type.
