How can I create files for the SIMUL8 Viewer?
You need SIMUL8 Professional to created SIMUL8 Viewer files. Just press SAVE. The ".S8" file type is what the SIMUL8 Viewer needs (but they must have been built in SIMUL8 Professional). S8 files built by SIMUL8 Standard will not work with the SIMUL8 Viewer.

If I upgrade from SIMUL8 Standard do I have to rebuild my simulation in SIMUL8 Professional?

Simulation must be "built" in SIMUL8 Professional, but I have already created many simulations in SIMUL8 Standard and I'd like to upgrade to SIMUL8 Professional to be able to distribute simulations using the SIMUL8 Viewer. Do I have to rebuild the simulation in SIMUL8 Professional?

No you do not have to rebuild them! - SIMUL8 Professional can upgrade your S8 files from the upgraded SIMUL8 Standard to work in the SIMUL8 Viewer simply by opening and re-saving them.

What if I have lots of SIMUL8 Standards and only 1 SIMUL8 Professional?
I manage IT in this company and we have 50 SIMUL8 Standards in use. Can we buy 1 copy of SIMUL8 Professional and run a service to convert SIMUL8 Standard files to work in the SIMUL8 Viewer?

No this is against the licensing arrangement for the SIMUL8 Viewer and against "fair usage". It is a condition of distributing files for the Viewer that they were "built" in SIMUL8 Professional. The "Open and Save" process above only works because SIMUL8 Professional recognizes the "upgrade" status of the simulations and the PC it is run on.

Taking over other users' simulations?
I have to take over simulations from other people and enhance them and I need to publish them using the SIMUL8 Viewer. The files were first created using SIMUL8 Standard on other users PC but I use SIMUL8 Professional and do a lot of work on the files before they get distributed. Surely this is within the sprit of "built in Professional".

Yes - it is "fair usage" and SIMUL8 Professional automatically recognizes this. The principle of this: If the simulation was mostly built on SIMUL8 Professional, or if you have upgraded the PC to SIMUL8 Professional, then the simulations it saves will work in the SIMUL8 Viewer.

Is there anything the SIMUL8 Viewer cannot do?
Just a few:

  • OptQuest for SIMUL8 does not work with the Viewer.
  • Features that only make sense when editing a simulation (like Stat::Fit) are not available with the Viewer.
  • There is no SAVE button because most simulation builders won't want users to be able to save, i.e. overwrite their simulation - but you can add your own menu and logic to press the save button for you.
  • The SQL features in SIMUL8 Professional are not available. SQL was designed to work with large system databases like Oracle that need to be purchased separately also.
  • SIMUL8's COM (ActiveX) and XML features are also not available with the free viewer as they can be used to create your own simulation package (and then we would not be able to sell SIMUL8 to our customers!)
  • Password protected files can't be opened.
  • You are only able to do single runs with SIMUL8 Viewer, trials will not work.
