This month we have been considering how reducing your carbon footprint is beneficial to your organization.
We also teach you how to use the SIMUL8 carbon footprint calculator , and want to know how important reducing your carbon footprint is to your organization in our poll.
In this issue:
SIMUL8 can tell you!
With World Earth Hour next week, everyone is getting ready to switch off their lights to reduce CO2 emissions. Here at SIMUL8 Corporation HQ we started considering if we are doing enough to reduce ours.
We think we are pretty good at it: we recycle, encourage downloads over shipping and try not to waste energy . But is an assumption about how good we are really the best way to measure our green credentials?
In order to help organizations measure the carbon footprint of their processes more accurately, the latest version of SIMUL8 has a carbon footprint calculator. This calculator allows you to fill in your carbon footprint information and then produce a report so you can analyze the results.
Some of you may be saying "So What?" but calculating your carbon footprint can be beneficial to your business in more ways than you realize.
What is Carbon Footprinting?
A 'carbon footprint' measures the total greenhouse gas emissions caused directly and indirectly by a person, organization, event or product.
A product's carbon footprint measures the greenhouse gas emissions at each stage of the product's life, from extraction and production, right through to disposal.
Why calculate your carbon footprint?
Measuring the carbon footprint of a process or organization offers a number of benefits, including:
If you can pinpoint areas that have a high carbon footprint it is also likely they are using a high level of resources for your organization. For example in terms of transport fuel, packaging or energy to produce.
Understanding your carbon footprint may also lead to improved efficiency within your organization. For example realizing that you have 2 processes with a high carbon footprint that could be combined into one.
As well as cost and emissions savings knowing your carbon footprint can also provide you with softer benefits, such as being seen as a leader in your industry on carbon reduction and attracting customers who are environmentally concious.
All SIMUL8 Corporation employees and offices will be joining with the rest of the world to switch off our lights for an hour on the 03/26/2011. Will your organization be doing the same?
In SIMUL8 you can easily calculate the environmental impact of any process.
Build your simulation, assign carbon values, press run and SIMUL8 calculates your footprint. Easy!
Input your information
To add carbon footprint information simply double click on any object in your simulation then click on the carbon option in the properties menu. Enter the carbon value.
Run your simulation
Run your simulation and the carbon values of your process are calculated.
Examine your results
Once the simulation has finished running SIMUL8 produces a carbon emissions report.
To view this report select 'Results' from the main menu and then 'Carbon Emissions'.
This report shows the total environmental impact of your process.
Once you know this impact you can focus in on the areas where you can reduce your carbon emissions.
This can make your company greener and save you money in the long term.
Viewing your emissions in this way is more beneficial than just having an overall carbon footprint as it allows you to focus on areas where change could be made and may pinpoint the best areas to reduce your footprint.
