Simulation is a critical part of Business Process Management. Even small projects designed to improve business processes can benefit hugely from simulation. Why?

Most Analyst firms are now reporting business critical benefits that come from using simulation as part of BPM activity: checking designs, resource planning, business rule checking, check-before-you-invest what-if analysis, training in the new/revised process, scenario planning for the unexpected.

None of these can be achieved with static flow planning tools that don't show you the flow and model, step by step use of resources, rules, constraints and how they interact across time. And these are reason enough to start simulating now.

However, what many of the analyst firms have not yet realized, but experienced simulators in BPM have is that simulation needs to be used right from the start. Simulation started in manufacturing. There it was similarly used as a "check the design will work" approach. What manufacturers realized eventually is that simulation needs to be used from the start because the design will only be right if the design process itself takes into account how all the resource and rules will interact to impact the process flows.

Here is how you will benefit if you use simulation from the start of your BPM implementation: Your process design team works with a flow and things all the time about how to make that flow work efficiently with minimum resources and maximum flexibility. They get ideas bounced back to them when they drop and new step in the process and see what happens to the flow. It shows them the bottlenecks they are creating (and how to avoid them) without waiting until the design works all done and the only question on their minds is "how do I find and easy way to fix this". Make sure you benefit from the design stage in the learning that simulation provides.

Why use SIMUL8 as your BPM simulator?

  • SIMUL8 is the simulation product that has the most links to BPM toolset products
  • SIMUL8 is the simulation product that was designed with Business Process as its key market
  • SIMUL8 is the simulation product most widely used by the large consulting firms
  • SIMUL8 is the simulation tool that, as you make more use of BPM, you will find fits with most or all tools you consider working with
  • SIMUL8 has round-trip data compatibility with the BPM toolsets so that simulation and other data intensive tool can work together "using the best tool for the job" working with just one set of data.
  • We and our certified trainers have the experience in BPM to train you fast

Why not use the simulation features in my BPM toolset?
Because their vendors don't when they need real simulation.

The simulators in the major toolsets are simple capacity planers. It is not possible to simulate the real business rules that make the real difference to process flows. The major toolsets that have their own simulation features also have technical export features to SIMUL8 because there customers demand real simulation from an industry standard simulation products.

With a capacity planner you will only every be able to use the "throw resources at it" method to size the process to the flows. (Usual answer in double the order means double the staff). With the detailed rules that professional simulation products handle you can use genuine management policy to make your process more efficient than the rest. (We will split and overlap shifts and share resources with the other department over weekends and only use skill C supervisors on customers with 2 outstanding reviews).

Integrate SIMUL8 in your Business Process toolset?
Because SIMUL8 was designed with simulation of business processes as its key market area, it fits neatly the structure of models of business processes. So its logically easy (and now only a few mouse click with the major packages) to import/export to and from your business process tool.

For BPM toolset vendors you need to know that SIMUL8 has a team dedicated to software integration, and we have flexible commercial plans to make integration easy on the budget too. SIMUL8 can co-exist with your product, or be invisibly integrated inside it using COM/ActiveX/XML/DLL or .NET technologies
